Mei-Ling's grandmother's funeral was held today. I had the pleasure of managing Raina at the end of the service. She had done so well sitting through all the prayers, readings and eulogies for about an hour in the very hot room, but at some point, it was becoming too much for her and she became restless, as 2 years olds do. So I picked her up to go to the back of the chapel where we would (hopefully) not bother too many people. This seemed to upset her more. She said she wanted her mummy. I whispered to her that that wasn't possible at the moment and I moved outside into the driveway, and that got her even more upset. When I moved further away again, onto the lawns, the pleas became louder and more impassioned. Eventually, I was invited into the management office (which, thankfully, was air conditioned. By now I was getting hot and flustered with all the screaming). Inside, Raina just lost it completely, shouting and crying at the top of her lungs, "I want mummy!" Glen Martin and William McGuire were in there, and did their best to appease the bawling girl.
The dialogue from there went something like this:
RAINA: "I want mummy! ... I want mummy! ... I WANT MUMMY! ... I WANT MUMMY NOW!!!"
MANAGER: "My, doesn't she have good diction."
RAINA: "I WANT MUMMY NOW!!! ... I STILL WANT MUMMY!!!"
GLEN: "Wow, good use of the word STILL."
Too funny, Glen. Glen and William, if you ever read this, thanks for your efforts to calm Raina down and help me out with a screaming toddler! It sure is funny looking back on it.
